Heartworm disease, which is spread by mosquitoes, can irreversibly damage the heart, lungs and blood vessels of your dog, cat or ferret. Treatment of this frequently fatal disease is very hard on dogs and next to impossible in cats and ferrets.

That’s why heartworm prevention is so important. Some preventatives also work against intestinal parasites, like hookworms, roundworms, whipworms and tapeworms. Still other preventatives also battle fleas, ticks and mites. Depending on the product, it may be applied to the skin, administered by mouth or injected. It’s important to remember that approved heartworm preventatives differ between dogs and cats, with cat products being safe for ferrets too.

Once you opt for heartworm prevention, your veterinarian can perform pre-treatment testing and suggest the right product for your pet.
